Roman Sprues Revealed!

11-Sep-2008 As we put the finishing touches on the boxes and run the plastic for our first two releases -- Caesar's Legions (Late Republican Romans) and British Infantry of the Zulu War -- we wanted to show the four 4" x 6" sprues that make up the Roman box set. There are 14 total sprues in the box!

Sprue 01 - Shields
Okay, not that exciting, but definitely necessary for Joe Legionary's health! There are three sprues in the box for 48 total shields (although you'll have extra as the Cornicen and Signifer wouldn't necessarily carry them). There are also 48 rub-on transfers (designed by Steve of Little Big Men Studios) but utilizing a cutting-edge, multi-layered printing technique that will let the designs really "pop" but can be applied very, very quickly and with a minimum of fuss (i.e. you don't need to carefully cut them out first!)

Sprue 02 - Command
This sprue allows you to assemble a Centurion, Optio, Cornicen, and Signifer (with either a "standard" standard or the famous Eagle standard). There are three of these sprues in the box so that you can create 3 16-man Field of Glory™ Battle Groups complete with unit commands.

Sprue 03 - Legionary 1
and

Sprue 04 - Legionary 2
Together there are eight of these last two sprues in the box to allow you to field 36 legionaries in a variety of poses including: at-ready with gladius or pilum, throwing pilum, attacking with gladius, advancing with pilum or gladius, etc. All bodies have sword hilts attached to scabbards and these can be snipped off with a hobby knife or clippers if the figure has a sword in hand. With the variety of bodies and weapons you can either create a mixed-action unit (front line stabbing, back line throwing or at-ready) or have all of one type in a single unit.

We are just wrapping up the package design/printing and will have these ready to ship out soon. The Caesar's Legions box set of 48 multi-part hard plastic miniatures has a suggested retail price of $29.95.

Are you going to sell extra sprues too? I can understand making these compatible with FOG units, but I play WAB so I'd like to build bigger units but probably won't need so many command figures. Might be good conversions for leader figures though or dead/wounded? But what the heck for 60 cents a figure it doesn't really matter does it?

would you really want units of bigger than 16 for romans? even in wab? i thought that the optimum unit size for romans was about 15-18.

I've fielded WAB EIR Regulars in units of 20-24 at times myself. Not that I do it regularly. I'm really settled into 16 so the box contents work just fine for me. Since I'm going to be replacing my current EIR (Late Republic OG) with these. :)

These look really nice and good value too. I woner if you could use them as earlier Republican troops armed with swords?

Looks great! I can't wait to get them in the mail! I got one question though: will bases be included (to put the units on) or should I buy those seperately? Thing is I'm from Holland and I don't know any miniature shops here except for GW, but afaik their bases have a slit in the middle. Regards
Otto commented on 12-Sep-2008 02:52 PM3 out of 5 stars
M.A., order from The War Stare online. You can order loads of GW bases from him for way cheap and without those variety packs GW sells. I got all my bases from The War Store for my Warlord Romans and Celts.

Lovely, I 've been waiting for these models, and they truly are marvelous (Sorry no spellchecker and i'am from the netherlands) And being from the netherlands, we do not have any dedecated miniature shops that sell the muchneeded bases but I'am putting all my models on metals washers (dutch name is carroserie ringen) they are 20 or 25 mm round made from zinkcoated steel and give an nice weight to the plastic models (they don't fall over when breathed at). Second the round bases will allow much easier ranking (I use movementtrays with magnetic foil)

Can we have more pics of the Celt sprues. Does anyone have any ideas on how to base these guys for both FOG and WAB. Maybe those magnetic movement trays from the Warstore?
M.A. commented on 24-Sep-2008 03:48 PM3 out of 5 stars
There's only 6 days left in September... Can you at least post some pictures of other products? I can wait but please more news, or perhaps could you set up a small forum so we have some place to talk about ideas etc. PS Thanks for the suggestions on bases!
