New Poll - Next Hard Plastic Ranges

14-Nov-2009 I love polling and I haven't done one in a long time. So since it's a rainy New England Fall day, I thought I'd put up a new one.

Hard plastics have taken the wargames world by storm over the last year and Wargames Factory has started four ranges of our own so far:

Might of Rome - All Things Rome and Her Enemies from 100 BC to about 200 AD - with 8 hard plastic sets to date!
Wars of Empire - Colonials starting with British and Zulus
Dark Futures - with Zombies being the first entry.
Hammer of the Gods - just launched with the Viking sampler pack, but with more Vikings and Saxons out soon.

We have several other things in the works - including many that have come out of the Liberty and Union League - our "if you vote for it, we'll make it" program - but I'm always interested to see where people's interests are.

We all know we're (wargamers) a sometimes fickle bunch drawn by the latest shiny set of rules, inspired by a book (or comic book for that matter), or salivating after watching a great movie and ready to start a new period.

What periods do you (currently!) want in hard plastic? Sorry, you can only pick one! Have fun!

Warlord's WW2 is all metal. They just put it in fancy boxes to try to fool people. Har har har. If Warlrod did the plastic they'd probably have us use the same spruce for British and Germans anyway. Hardy har har. Anybody else cheesed off about the fact that almost every set they make for anceints uses the same gaul plastic spruces?

The Anonymous guy who says to do ranges that aren't done in 28mm already isn't getting the whole economics of producing plasics, is he? Dude it costs a thirty grand to make one of those molds. You can't make some obscure thing or WF would be out of biz in a week!

You should concentrate on the Dark Futures range because it has a different slant from all of your other ranges, and it needs more effort put into it if it is ever going to be anything more than a kind of "rag tag" collection of a few boxed sets that are not cohesive. It will also be very popular. There are ALREADY TWO RANGES OF HARD PLASTIC NAPOLEONICS, which are very high quality and very cheap indeed. You can't seriously hope to make money by releasing more napoleonics. Instead, concentrate upon dark ages stuff and do everyhting from the viking period up to the hundred years war. That will attract less competition but at the same time be very popular. If you do napoleonics, you will have to reduce the price of your troops to compete with big companies. Dark Futures will probably be the most popular by far. It will bring in a whole new bunch of gamers if advertised properly, but apart from that.. finish off dark ages?
Anonymous commented on 14-Nov-2009 01:59 PM3 out of 5 stars
I don't know...theres a lot of low hanging fruit in Napoleonics...Austrians...Prussians...WF should maybe just put out one and see how it does. The French have to fight somebody accept the British at some point.
Lord Ashram commented on 14-Nov-2009 02:03 PM3 out of 5 stars
Would LOVE some AWI stuff, as no one does that in plastic, and a really varied militia pack with a lot of options would be HUGE... plus, it wouldn't take many packs to give a nice general covering of the period.

WWI would be my favorite (amongst other things but if I'd have to settle for one I'd choose this period). Very popular rules available. No plastics on the market yet. Lots of infantry needed. Cavalry still on the battlefield as well though! Seperate heads could provide early and late war troops in one box. Easy conversions for trench raiders or stormtroopers. British, French and German first, then maybe ANZAC, Turks and Austrians, tanks, planes...and all the rest of it. Oh well, unfortunately WWI is not so widely popular over there in the colonies, so very unlikely to happen. Guess I'll have to do my own company (or stick with metals..) Cheers Labienus

definitely a greek army! maybe not the 300 thing but a generic greek pike phalanx and some greek cavalry suitable to represent any of the city states. (and yes, you would then have to make persians to battle them)
Matt commented on 14-Nov-2009 07:26 PM3 out of 5 stars
War of Spanish Succession - just makes so much sense. All the nations line foot could be covered with a single sprue. Throw in some conversion sprues with Grenadier head variants and you have a complet infantry range. Same rule applies for the cav (exc Currasiers). One mould for all nations - why wouldn't you? Black Powder seems to be generating Horse and Musket fever and no one does a competing range- Simples!!!
Stonewall115 commented on 14-Nov-2009 08:40 PM3 out of 5 stars
Personally, I agree with Labienus and would like to see some WWI figures in plastic. It is my favorite time period and I don't want a horde of metals all in the same dozen poses advancing across No-Man's-Land. I like the posability your models allow when assembling and would love to see some Great War troops with that. And the range wouldn't have to focus on 1914-1918, but could include everything from the turn of the century to Inter-War period.
Anonymous commented on 14-Nov-2009 08:49 PM3 out of 5 stars
To that annonymous poster on napoleonics- eventually the other fellas will probably do a very full range of napoleonics. It would be madness for WGF to try to specialise in one niche area of napoleonics because the French and British are the most popular. Unless you can make the box sets seriously cheap (like thirty for less than £15) you are going to have trouble with Napoleonics.
Anonymous commented on 14-Nov-2009 09:00 PM3 out of 5 stars
Most WF sets are $19.95 about £12 and most are 28-32 figures...so they're already there with the pricing. I kindof doubt the Perrys will have the attention span to do much more in Napoleonics and they tend to do rather boring marching pose type sets anyway. Victrix are more dynamic...
xoddam70 commented on 14-Nov-2009 09:18 PM3 out of 5 stars
I would like to see more ancients, presently I have been holding back(although I have bought some zombies) waiting for Imperial Romans....once they are available...and I buy them..I will get the germans. Other than that, I would love to see biblical-Hittites/Egyptians/etc. I love the period but the price for all those chariots is crazy in metal. Really any army with alot of cav. would be great in plastic to save the cost...just my thoughts.
Joe commented on 14-Nov-2009 09:37 PM3 out of 5 stars
I really hope time isn't wasted on sci-fi and fantasy nonsense. Just an opinion. I'd love to do something in the 18th-century time frame, but am unwilling to pull the trigger without knowing if WF will do some generic infantry in plastic. If they do, I'm all aboard.

Anonymous commented on 15-Nov-2009 03:35 AM3 out of 5 stars
The last time I cheecked $20 was about, hmmm lets see - £20 (post credit crunch), particularly if you include the exchange rate. I am pretty sure Vitrix will produce a large amount of Napoleonics. It would not be commercially viable for WGF to enter this field when they already have so many competators. You may like the idea of it, but it would probably be a commercial disaster.

I voted for 7YW, but come to think of it, I would really like to see some dark future/post-apoc stuff. By that I don't necssarily mean the far-future tribal anachronisms (alla mad max, fallout), I think a situation shortly after the zombie outbreak would be cool; armed civilians, few, but well equiped spec-ops (with cool equipment, possibly wearing creepy gas masks, so they can be also used as some distopian "gestapo" force) and lone rangers, with rag-tag hazard suits, armed with all sorts of russian and western weaponry of our time. Let me argument on that; such figs could be used for anything from (near-future) sci-fi gaming to survival/distopian horror and post-apoc. So far one had to chase down appropriate SciFi minis and/or mod moder stuff. For references (especially on the "army" and "loners")check; -the Ariadna faction in Infinity (for the mix of new technologies and wooden-stocked assault rifles) -S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game series (to see how the army and how the civilians would equip to venture into the radioactive zone) -Half Life 2 and following episodes (for the "gestapo" masked bad guys and organised civilian resistance) -a bunch of horror movies, games and books, where some special forces unit takes the central stage and gets choped up piece by piece

IMHO WSS/SYW etc. is the premium way to go along with further Dark Ages releases. There is no one else doing either in plastic, and for the 18th century the demand is going to be there from Old School wargamers. Another thing is to look at fantasy. Any plastics that compete favourably with GW prices, which cannot be a difficulty, would be snapped up. Dwarves? Lizardmen, Ratmen. You name it, if I can pay $20 for 40 figures versus paying $20 or more for 10 figures in this day and age, well, I know who is going to get my money.
sire commented on 15-Nov-2009 11:12 AM3 out of 5 stars

Good poll…. Boy did you open a can of worms!! Loved the comments and have to concur with many. I voted for WWII although I like what you have been doing with the Ancients and believe that continuing that line to its natural conclusion is worth pursuing. AWI & ACW are something I enjoy playing as well as Franco/Prussian/Austrian…etc. BUT, I want plastic WWII troops. Let me rephrase that…GREAT LOOKING plastic WWII troops!! I can more easily modify to my needs. I have a nice metal army, but with the plastic troops I can customize gun crews, vehicle drivers and riders, truck loaders and assorted “other” poises that are too static in the metal ranges available (not to mention the expense!) I believe I am not alone in this desire. Metal is not that easy to modify/customize and although many other manufacturers produce a wide range of poses, do you really want a duce and a half full of sitting troops that look more like clones or a dynamic set of “boys” that look war weary and individualistic??? I put together about 50 "Caesar’s Legions" and even though there were several similar poses, they were all still unique individuals and when painted and mounted up this was clear to see! Adding in a bunch of plastic with my metal can only help make the entire force look better! I already mix metal manufacturer’s troops together, I have no problem with some being a little large than others….people are not all the same size either!!!
Anderson commented on 16-Nov-2009 12:39 PM4 out of 5 stars
I love all three of your historical ranges (and have bought bunches of all) but have to vote for additions to the dark future/ post apocalytic line, hands down. The zombies need some victims and adversaries and it is an area with lots of potential -- SWAT, near future military, hi-tech to low-tech sci fi soldiers, mutants, wasteland marauders, aliens (love those little greys), generic power armor, robots, giant bugs, and almost any similar sci fi subject will fit. These also have lots of capacity for conversions and modifications. I very much like seeing more realistically proportioned sci fi -- as an alternative to the cartoon characters now available in plastic multi-pose. Lastly, a brief look through the L and U entries gives a pretty good indication of what's drawing interest and will, therefore, sell. Maybe you could you try to hitch up with a post apoc game system, such as your original affiliation with Field of Glory? P.S. Beware of using the title "Dark Futures" as it may bear too strong a similarity with a 1980's game published by those other guys; hate to see you buying a lawsuit.

Difficult, It strange but my first boxes of romans arrived more or less a year ago ( I live in the netherlands and I still think customs never have seen plastic models before). Little did I suspect what was coming towards us, Wargames factory went from a company that had only "virtual" models to show to a large range of sets/ranges within a year. I really want more of all ranges, but ancients have always been more intresting for me, so even after 300+ romans and lots of celts, numidians and germans... more ancients, Hoplite greek would be nice or Egypt. Please put out the WSS infantry and some horse and cannon to go with it. I have a project that could really use them and after seeing the infantry sprue top 1000, the prior "GO" mark for L&L, and then just sit there for an age I have lost some faith in the Liberty and Union League concept. You seem to have ancients pretty well cornered, so I understand sticking with it. If anything I'd say pick a range and fill it before offering anything else to the public as a potential product.

i think dark future mini's would be good but they are common now and there are quite a number out there i would and many friends would like to see a more historic wargame. GREEKS/MACEDONIANS/EGYPTIANS

What i would love to find are plastic hoplites and ancient egyptian and hittite troops. The only one i've found so far that does these are Foundry (in metal) and making an ancient battles scaled army with those would cost me more than my apartment. And a box of ancient civillians would be awesome.

fascinating to read what people are working on!-but figures to suit the 1930s-pulp adventures etc and moderns to suit ambush alley would be great!most of these would crossover to many periods eg moderns to post appocalypse(spelling?)pulp figures to cthulhu type gaming etc regards Markus from Australia

I'd like to echo Labienus and Stonewall115 comments. There is a growing number of rule sets for WWI skirmish games and this is a period that is only covered by metals that I know of. A well detailed range of infantry up to and including heavy infantry weapons for Britain, France and Germany followed by Australians/ Canadians/ Sth Africans, Turks/Ottomans, Italians, Belgians and Austrians. There is a growing market for good plastic figures in this genre.

Samurai would be cool, since the Perry bros. are mostly metal.

15 mm would be cool. (Ancient, WW2, Napoleonic, etc) WW2 1/300 scale aircraft would be cool. Plastic LOTR compatible fantasy figs might be cool too.

Some 1660 to 1705 style infantry with a selection of different headgear would fill several gaps.

I honestly don't understand the whole "Dark Future" push, especially since there are already so many companies that offer that kind of thing. More grotesquely malformed people in "power armor?" Snoozefest. A nice box of Marlburians with some head variants would permit a plethora of gamers who WSS or Imagination gaming to mass up gigantic armies on the cheap. You couldn't possibly lose.

I voted Ancient. Another Roman sprue with arms and heads to give a better look to the 1st Century BCE Romans. That said, I love to see some less tread stuff. Why not the 3 Kingdom armies of China? Since all the troops would look more or less alike, you would need a infantry set, a Cavalry set, and a Weapons sprue. Add a couple of special figures in the mix for characters such as strategist, commanders, and heroes and you have a complete range. You could even add Chariots and warmachines in for a earlier armies of the Han. I would buy boatloads of such figures.

Good no EXCELLENT POLL. But don't forget what everyone always neglects... CREWS, wagon teams etc. all the extra stuff.

Keep making ancients, dark ages, and medieval. They are the bread and butter of the wargaming world together with Napoleonics. Do not stop making historicals. PLEASE.

Please do the Greatcoats already. And do them 30mm, bigger than the historical range. Why the wait by doubling the number of pre-orders? Don't you want to make money? How's S.W.A.T.S. for a name,Severe.Weather.Assault.Squad? You could do a lighter jacketed squad in future. The coats are long because of bad weather, right???

Japanese Shogunate with some period specificity (Nobunaga/Hideyoshi/Tokugawa for arquebus and spear, or Genpei/Hojo Regency for bows, naginata, big, fancy armor, and maybe some Mongolian invaders). No one's doing Japanese in 28mm plastics... yet... More "Great Coat" stuff, as a close second.
Drew commented on 29-Jan-2010 03:40 PM3 out of 5 stars
I honestly would LOVE to see somebody do a range of plastics for the War of 1812 and the Creek War. I think it would be very cool to see Andrew Jackson and his militia in a plastic set! (Perhaps you could make Jackson in metal rather than plastic. That would be doubly cool.)

Near or Dark Future, or Weird War II.

Italian wars (medieval) would be nice as they can double up for other armies of this period. Also 30YW/ECW as mentioned above.
