Celt Ponies Revealed and New Painting by Sean Deitrick Posted: September 11, 2008 The brushes of Sean Deitrick have worked their magic again! First up is a vine-stick bearing Optio ready to keep the boys in line: ![]() Sean also put together a couple of the ponies from the forthcoming Celt Cavalry box. These are two of the 64 (!) different poses that can be created with this box! The ponies are 3-part: right half, left half, and head and all parts can be combined together for a variety of "looks". We've also kept the saddles separate.
There's another surprise coming with this box -- but we're saving that for a bit later! ![]() _______________________________________________ Posted: August 12, 2008 As we have been perfecting our process for taking digital sculpture direct to injection mold tooling, we initiated several projects to test various methods. Although started after the Romans and Celts (and a few others!), this single sprue of British line infantry for the Zulu War breezed through to final form the fastest! ![]() This sprue represents the "standard" that all coming Wargames Factory sprues will match (except the Romans which were already far along in the tooling process!) We have standardized on a 4" x 6" size that will allow us to have a lot of flexibility to have single sprues that have enough variety for a full set of figures, or are one of many unique sprues in a box set. This particular sprue is a good example of the variety that can be achieved in a single-sprue set of figures. We have 5 bodies (2 unique poses), 7 unique heads (5 with separate pith helmets), 3 right arms holding a Martini-Henry "ready", 3 right arms holding a Martini-Henry rifle in a shoulder-firing pose, 6 left arms (2 poses), 1 right arm loading, and 1 loose Martini-Henry which can be used with the loading arm and/or cradled in a left arm as the figure waves the boys forward. We believe you'll be thrilled with the unique poses that can be achieved with this and we are working on painted examples to post up! _______________________________________________ Early Imperial Roman -- Work in Progress! Posted: April 28, 2008 Sculpted by Tim Barry, Art Director and Chief Sculptor We're hard at work here getting ready for the launch of the Late Republican era Romans -- Caesar's Legions featuring chain (lorica hamata), but as you can imagine we have to prepare months in advance for future sets and we were inspired by the recent (April 21st) anniversary of the founding of the city of Rome (April 21, 753 BC) to show some the first of an entire range of Early Imperial Romans! The Early Imperials will be featured in the upcoming Field of Glory™ companion army book Legions Triumphant (available from Osprey Publishing this June). Unlike Caesar's Legions of the Late Republic period, the Early Imperial legionaries wore the iconic segmented/banded armor (lorica segmentata) and carried the squared off scutum shield. This is a work in progress shot with some changes to be made. The pose is taken from the cover of the Field of Glory main rules book although we have made this a line legionary and not a Centurion. We'll follow him up with some other figures from this range -- and others! ![]() _______________________________________________ A Tribute to Angus McBride Posted: April 15, 2008 Sculpted by Tim Barry, Art Director and Chief Sculptor Some of you noticed that yesterday's post of the Celts included one big and burly guy who seemed familiar! Well, we're tremendous Angus McBride fans here at Wargames Factory, so when we started sculpting the Celts I asked Tim Barry to take a look at a few of McBride's Osprey illustrations and see if he could pay homage to the master illustrator! He chose the "big guy" on the cover of Osprey's Men-at-Arms 158: Rome's Enemies 2 Gallic and British Celts. Although we didn't include any Celt naked warriors (Gaestati), we felt Angus wouldn't mind if we came close on his fantastic illustration. ![]() ![]() _______________________________________________ Here Come the Celts! Posted: April 14, 2008 Sculpted by Tim Barry, Art Director and Chief Sculptor We've been keeping these guys a little under wraps as we got them just right and ready for the molding process but thought that you deserved a sneak peak! Arranged here for battle are five of the literally thousands of combinations available with this box set! They've been designed with separate arms and heads -- and also separate torsos so that you can create the dramatic poses that these ferocious warriors were known for! More to come in the next few days! ![]() _______________________________________________ Signifer (Aquilifer) with Eagle Standard Posted: February 19, 2008 Sculpted by Tim Barry, Art Director and Chief Sculptor The Signifer is the standard bearer in a Roman century and each Legion also had a senior Signifer called an Aquilifer who carried the Legion's Eagle standard. Signifers were outfitted with wolf, bear, and even lion heads with pelts to distinguish them from the line legionaries. Our Roman box set comes with three Signifers which (with the other 45 figures in the box) allow you to create three full Field of Glory™ Battle Groups. The eagle standard is rather special and we have more "standard" standards! ![]() _______________________________________________ Optio with Vine Stick Posted: February 4, 2008 Sculpted by Tim Barry, Art Director and Chief Sculptor See, I said we'd have more to show soon! Here's a variation on the Centurion to create an Optio -- the second in command of a Roman Century who kept order at the back of the ranks. Our Optio is sporting a full crest and his sword arm is holding the famous grapevine stick with which he kept the legionaries in line and moving forward to meet the enemy. One famous historical Centurion in Tacitus' Annals was nicknamed "Bring Another" because every time he broke a stick over a legionary's back he cried out, "Bring another!" You can just as easily discard the vine stick for a sword arm and/or use this head variation for the Centurion leading from the front. ![]() _______________________________________________ Legionary Throwing Pilum Posted: February 4, 2008 Sculpted by Tim Barry, Art Director and Chief Sculptor We've had a TON of requests for this pose (among others!) We've tried to stike a balance between being more true-to-life and the "Wargames Standard" look for the pilum. This should fit in with other ranges quite well without that telephone pole look! More to come! Soon. ![]() _______________________________________________ Centurion! Posted: January 29, 2008 Sculpted by Tim Barry, Art Director and Chief Sculptor Shown without his shield, this Centurion is ready to lead his legionaries into battle. Transverse crest, greaves, gladius sheath on the opposite hip, and phalerae medallions on his chest mark him as a veteran of many successful battles. ![]() _______________________________________________ Stabbing Roman!
Posted: January 26, 2008 Sculpted by Tim Barry, Art Director and Chief Sculptor Here's another pose -- this time a Legionary is getting ready to "poke", "pickle", "skewer" -- whatever terminology best works for you - his opponent (probably one of those "nasty" Celts!). ![]() _________________________________________________ Romans - First Look! Posted: January 25, 2008 Sculpted by Tim Barry, Art Director and Chief Sculptor A first glimpse of an assembled multi-part 28mm (Wargames Standard 1/56th Scale) Roman Legionary. This figure is made up of five separate parts -- head, body, two arms, and shield! Notice that the hilt is empty in the sheath on his hip -- the bodies come with a hilt attached that is easily "snipped" off with a pair of hobby cutters! ![]() |
