Update April 6, 2009: Chariots painted by Steve Dake (photography by Don Nelson):

Update: March 18, 2009:

Here are four chariots that Tony assembled and took quick snapshots of in the Triangle foyer! The first chariot features a driver holding a horse standard and the "bonus" Celt Queen figure with a spear (you can also swap the spear for a javelin, sword, or severed Roman head!)

Notice the various driver positions - including Tony getting a bit too creative with the chap on top of the horses at the back tugging at the reigns!

Here's the same scene from the other side. In the front chariot, the driver body from first chariot has been turned into a rider/fighter with the addition of a shield and sword.

Front view - notice the second chariot from the right and the driver pose seated/leaning back.

Here's the chariot sprue - there are 3 of these in the set:

1 chariot (two rail options), 4 figures, 5 unique heads. You also receive the arm/weapon sprue from the Celt Warband set that has 2 additional warriors (one in chainmail) and you also get a sprue of extra heads and shields (16 heads and 11 shields)

Here's the horse sprue - 3 unique bodies (that can be combined in 9 ways) and 4 unique heads -- 36 unique combinations per sprue. There are two in the set.

Apologies for the not-great photography!

The chariot poles look far too thick and the chariot bodies are much too heavily constructed. The drivers look very awkwardly posed, too, and I don't like the Boudicca.

That's an amazing deal and these look incredible! 14 figures AND 3 chariots for 20 bucks!

I am simply blown away by the contents of the box. The extra people, the queen, 4 unitque horses instead of just the same one fourt imes over, etc... An outstanding value

Brilliant kit! Chariots are one of those larger models that are often so expensive, that some gamers would be excluded from even trying certain armies. Three chariots with customizable bits at this price? Absolutely fantastic.

Not bad. Not bad at all. I pre-ordered 6 sets on the assumption that there would be 2 chariots to a set so I'll probably have to downgrade to just the 4 boxes but it's all the same in the end. I think I'll wait to get them from a UK supplier too, I don't fancy getting hit up for the customs sharges. I really hope Northstar get some in soon.
Thomas commented on 18-Mar-2009 02:52 PM5 out of 5 stars
Hi Undave: I think you should order direct if you are a Liberty and Union pre-orderer. That's the spirit of this program as a direct order from you puts $20 to the company whereas an order with a retailer only gets them $10. My sense after talking to Tony and Howard at Cold Wars is that the 500 pre-orders cover a lot of the costs so that the retailer sales are the profit. But if everyone who pre-orders goes out and buys from a retailer, the numbers might not work for the program. Anyway, for what it's worth.
Undave commented on 18-Mar-2009 03:36 PM4 out of 5 stars
I may still do so, it depends on whether I can get one of my US mates to ship them over to me. I'm sure you'll agree that by the time I add on the extra shipping costs, the ridiculous £8.50 Royal Mail flat rate processing charge, the VAT and the import tax I might as well just go for a more expensive UK produced version. I can bypass most of that by getting them from a retailer and money still goes into WF's pockets. If they didn't want people buying their product from independent retailers why bother selling through them in the first place? I get what you're saying but the product isn't going to be limited to the first 500 sales, especially something as mainstream as Celtic chariots. If it were something a bit more niche like a set of rocket powered attack badgers that wasn't likely to be picked up by many retailers and wouldn't sell well beyond the first few orders then I would likely order it direct. I forgot to do the stars thing last time so I'll do it this time round ;) Anyone fancy adding rocket powered attack badgers to the L&U list?

Six boxes of chariots charging into the Roman flanks.

Steve has good thoughts in my book. I really LIKE the set/box/whatever. Darn good price too. So get a small group together and order a couple of boxes for each player.

Very impressive, 12 chariots to rumble upon the Romans

These look awesome - especially compared to all the lead models I've stuggled with putting together, and then putting together again when they fall, and then putting together again when a gamer picks them up, and so on

Wow! I did not expect to see these so soon! I am excited to see my roman and celtic armies grow larger so I can play bigger games of FOG:D Looking foward to seeing more historical units for romans and celts such as comanders, roman chariots, cavalry, etc... Great job!

Great value, nice sculpting of the horses and riders, but the vehicle itself sort of mars it. It's way too thick. The car itself I could live with, but the yoke pole is just ridiculous! If I buy them I'll have to make my own or whittle these down or something.
oldgreg commented on 24-Mar-2009 07:42 PM1 out of 5 stars
this is the best thng you have made so far....... but it is still very, very bad.
melt horse commented on 24-Mar-2009 07:53 PM3 out of 5 stars
well for a start the horses heads seem to have melted somewhat!
KMM commented on 28-Mar-2009 03:33 PM4 out of 5 stars
Just recieved my chariots and put a few together. I have to same I'm fairly impressed - they're really making progress from the original Romans. The yoke pole actually isn't as thick as it looks in the picture. My only complaint is the horses heads, one of them is pretty nice, one is ok, the other two are pretty ugly. No worse than a lot of metal horses I've seen, but they should be better. Still, good work guys.
Dan Peterson commented on 01-Apr-2009 04:49 PM4 out of 5 stars
This kit is definately an improvement over the earlier ones with the ability to change the figures with alternate heads. This makes it that much more of a pity that you coluldn't do this for the most important ancient set, the Roman Legionaries, as I originally recommended before it was produced. The Republican Romans should have had 4 or 5 head/helmet variants, instead of identical helmets as if they were soldiers of the 20th century. And with heads that are the correct size for 40mm 1/48 scale figures, these are always going to look like dwarves.

I HAVE COMPARED THESE CHARIOTS WITH MODELS I HAVE FROM 3 OTHER MANUFACTURERS(ALL LEAD) AND IN MY OPINION YOURS ARE BETTER. THE HORSE HEADS ARE A LITTLE OFF BUT IF YOU LOOK AT REAL HORSES THEY VARY A GREAT DEAL.THE FAT BODY LOOK REALLY LOOKS REALISTIC FOR A PONY USED FOR PULLING CHARIOTS (AND CAVALRY). I DON'T BUY THE BIG DEAL ABOUT THE CHARIOT YOKE AS YOU CAN BARELY SEE IT ANYWAY WHEN THE CHARIOT IS BUILT. VERY WELL DONE GUYS - BRING ON GERMAN CAVALRY THAT DON'T HAVE THEIR ARMS STRETCHED TO THE SKY!!

Yours are the most inexpensive chariot squadron set available, usually the chariots are sold singley for the same price as the 3 in your box set, plus the extra 8 figures make for some nice infantry to accompany the squadron

Ok, you guys are starting to impress me. Awesome product at an awesome price! Keep it up guys!

I think the 14 multi-part figures 31 heads offered in this sprue is extremly generous (and useful!) of WF. Great product!

OK, I wasn't impressed with the box of colonials I bought, but these and the Celtic cavalry are impressive, and the price is out standing. When are they expected to be released in the UK.
Suetonis commented on 10-Jun-2009 06:18 PM3 out of 5 stars
well, after speaking to a few historians appearently these aren't too accurate but still, since it seems such things don't exist, these are still very nice and I will probaly order some

Brilliant, i especially like the Bodicca figure, thats a nice touch.
Thom O commented on 29-Jan-2010 02:59 PM4 out of 5 stars
Picked up a box of these and was impressed with the way they go together. Horses are OK. A kneeling (on one knee) driver would have been much better than the sitting driver. Boudicca figure is a total waste, she looks more like a cheer leader than a warrior queen.
Bjorn commented on 29-Mar-2010 05:29 PM4 out of 5 stars
Since the webpage says they are out of stock, and there seems to be little new content, i'm just wondering where i can pick up a box of these! The quality seems top-notch from here, and the models very versatile, i just need to know who sells them if the website is no longer doing so.
